Pre-Season Training - Rationale for requested $300

Hello Express Fans,

The Express team is working very diligently for you.  The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to change the way we do things.  While we navigate this fluid, new landscape, we appreciate your patience.  We also appreciate the way you are helping us by completing the COVID questionnaire before EVERY training session.  Thanks!

We wanted to give you an update regarding what we are planning in the next few months.

-over 100 athletes enjoyed all the Outdoor and Online Training Sessions for all players who are registered for try-outs, all for $25.00

-Try-outs were held at the FlightExec Centre in Dorchester

October - December

-Competitive Teams will train indoors at various locations, including the Power Alley, 560 Talbot St., St Thomas **athletes MUST wear masks inside to train at the Power Alley**

As a club we have decided to not force coaches to form teams at this time (waiting on OVA and Ontario Government). Instead, we INVITE all members to continue with some indoor training, until such time decisions have been made and the competitive season is a go. (Hopefully this gorgeous weather sticks around for some outdoor training!)

In the past, our gyms/facilities were almost entirely subsidized by the Ministry of Education and usually represented ~5% of our total operating budget (i.e., very little).  However, because the schools are not open to the public, any facilities we rent will have to be paid for at a higher cost. To cover costs for more expensive facilities, PPE, insurance, and coaching stipends, we will be charging $300 per player for PRE-SEASON TRAINING. We will be opening PRE-SEASON TRAINING Registration October 1st. This will allow your athlete to train and play from October until mid-December with the group they are currently registered with. Any unused costs will be applied towards competitive registration fees (if the OVA moves forward with a competitive season), or refunded to you at the end of December. Deadline to register is October 15th, 2020, so we may have practice shirts ordered.

If the OVA decides to cancel the competitive season, we hope to provide our athletes with an opportunity to continue training and playing in the new year - we will announce registration and fee details sometime in December.

All of our plans for this season are conditional upon government COVID restrictions for indoor team play.

If you choose not to continue with training for your athlete after October 1st, we wish you the best and hope that you consider rejoining our family next season when things get back to normal.

The plan for the season: We are committed to keeping the cost low and the value high. We, at EXPRESS feel keeping the athletes on the court is what would be best for them physically and mentally and at this time we feel this is our best option. We, nor the OVA know exactly what is going to happen and we feel being transparent with our EXPRESS Families is in the best interest of everyone involved.

We hope this clarifies our plan and puts your mind at ease.   We appreciate your patience as we monitor the situation with OVA daily and continually look for ways to maximize play and minimize costs. Remember, PRE-SEASON Training Registration opens this Thursday, October 1st.

Yours in Joy and Technique,

Dear Express Families,

We hope this message finds you well.

Unfortunately, the OVA has just announced (June 17) that the indoor season will be postponed until Jan. 2021.

While we are disappointed, your Express Team will find ways to keep volleyball going until then.

Stay Tuned.

OVA Return to Play

The Ontario Volleyball Association is providing a great deal of detail regarding the return to play effort this year. Most regions across Ontario have moved to Phase 2 (OVA pdf document), and the OVA is working to develop its guidelines for Phase 3. Our region will be moving to Phase 3, however, the suggested OVA guidelines have not yet been approved, we do not know what our local school boards will allow regarding our permit requests, and we rely on schools for our court space.  We will provide updates to these items as soon as we know more.

Other components that will be required for athletes and coaches at any level of participation will be required to complete and sign the OVA provided, "OVA_COVID_Waiver" document.  If they do NOT complete the waiver, we will not allow the athlete or coach to participate in any Express VC activities.  This will be automatically part of all registration activities on the website.

Until further notice, anyone planning on participating in any activities MUST complete the online Activity Health Screening Questionnaire prior to attending the event each day.  This includes our R2P programs, tryouts, etc. If the athlete does not, we will not allow the athlete to participate.  It is a simple online form, please have your athletes complete it within one(1) hour prior to the session they will be participating in. The questionnaire is also located on the front page of
